Ning is an online platform where people and organisations can create social custom networks. It allows customers to create their very own social networks for special interests, which can be integrated with Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo and LinkedIn, making it easy to spread the word.
The English rock band Radiohead use Ning to distribute their social community ‘W.a.s.t.e. Central’, where enthusiastic fans can keep up to date with tour listings, write blogs, create their own personalised space, connect with the band and even make their own remixes of Radiohead songs. It is a way for Radiohead to fuel their fan following.
There are a few tricks when it comes to creating a successful social network. Gina Bianchini, CEO of Ning, talks about the idea of the company on Personal Life Media, and her advice on how to create a thriving network is:
- A strong network creator: it always starts with one person, and a social network can get very big by the initial work of one individual. The network creator invites his/her initial group, and works with the small group to find the right content, voice and brand for the network. From there on the network can grow.
- Authenticity: people want to see passion and share that passion with other people who are as passionate about the particulate topic. Create a unique Ning account for the thing you care about in the way you care about it.
- A nice brand: compelling content, interesting people. People should be active on the network in the sense that they have uploaded photos, contributed profiles and just vibrant and alive.
It’s now possible for anyone to be the new Mark Zuckerberg!
